Goldcrest BPW 01/11/2012.

NOTE: 13.11.2012: While nothing definite can be said without the call, the opinions now favour P.c. abietinus, mainly because it does not look dark grey enough for tristis. However there is much overlap and not even experts seem to agree, if you read enough it can just seems more confusing, probably why these races have not been split!

We believe this could be a ‘Siberian’ Chiffchaff (P.c. tristis) because of the following features. Overall pale grey tone to plumage, pure white underparts with at the sides no hint of yellow (maybe a touch of mucky buff), shorter primary projection (only equalled by P.c. abietinus in migratory races). Yellow/green underwing coverts. Maybe most important the ear coverts (cheeks) are pale mucky plain white without any markings at all, a feature not shared with any other race (or even the browner form of tristis), the supercillium is the same colour, both with no hint of yellow. The supercilium in front of the eye is broad unlike for abietinus. There is a hint of pale olive green on the back, which this race can show but maybe too much on this bird? It is only visible at extreme close range in certain light, in the field it would look grey. I am not very experienced with this race and any comments would be welcome (BPW). Wing 64mm, weight 7.9gms. Without calls unlikely to be accepted.
