This small site used to be a good little area of flooded fields near the M180 motorway junction 1 with the roundabout onto A614. However it was scraped with a view to possible sand and gravel extraction, but then just left. The wet area was then larger and deeper and was still good for birds and it was left this way for some years. Then it was finally taken over by an aggregate recycling company, who brought in crushing and grading machines and processed incoming soil and stone. That was the end for the bird interest and the site looks to remain this way.
I have included it just to show how easily and insidiously, almost in perceptively wildlife areas are being lost. It wasn’t a great site, it never had a major rarity, but it was an oasis in a sea of arable farmland, motorways and urban sprawl that provided a vital truck stop for passing migrants and was home year round for Kestrels and voles alike. Now its gone.
